Clitheroe Castle
Clitheroe Castle Museum and keep perch on a limestone mound overlooking the delightful market town of Clitheroe.
The keep, built in the 1100s by the de Lacy family, is England's second smallest. Situated so that it commanded trade routes and kept an eye on the Scots, it was subsequently used as an administration centre. Today, the buildings within the castle walls house the museum, café, gift shop, education suite and the Steward's Gallery.
The museum covers 350million years of local history. Refurbished in 2009, the interactive galleries provide entertainment and knowledge for all. There are child friendly activities, and information relating to topics from geology to archaeology and cotton mills to local heroes.
